Police identify man killed by officer
Miami-Dade police have released the identity of a man killed in a confrontation with an officer Wednesday evening.
Julio Santiago, 33, of Miami, died after an officer shot him, Miami-Dade police said.
Police said the incident began when a Miami Beach police officer involved in the Miami-Dade Police Department's Robbery Intervention Detail went to the area of 75th Street and Northwest Sixth Avenue after hearing gunfire.
The officer saw an SUV driving away and gave chase, police said. After a brief pursuit, the driver, whom police identified as Santiago, got out of the SUV and ran away, police said.
The officer tracked down the man, and there was a confrontation, during which the officer fatally shot Santiago, Miami-Dade police said.
Police said the SUV had been reported as stolen from the Palm Beach area.
